Confessing our Messes

5This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him. If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin. If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins—make a clean breast of them—he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. If we claim that we’ve never sinned, we out-and-out contradict God—make a liar out of him. A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God. 1 John 1:5-10 (the Message)

All  of us are sinners by nature. At conversion all sins were forgiven – past, present AND future. Many people believe that a sin is forgiven when it is confessed, but if they died they would be lost forever. It doesn’t work like this.. He allowed His beloved Son to die just to offer us the pardon. When we come to Christ, he forgives all the sins we have committed or we will ever commit. We don’t need to confess the sins of the past all over again, and we don’t need to fear that Christ will reject us if we don’t keep our slate perfectly clean. Of course we should commit our sins – not to gain God’s acceptance but to remove the barrier to fellowship that our sin has put between us and Him. Many of us are too prideful to admit the sin before our God yet there is nothing to fear — He already knows them!! It takes honesty and humility to recognize our weaknesses. He will not push us away, NO MATTER WHAT WE’VE DONE!! Instead, He will draw us near to himself.
